It’s not over. Just waiting for the right

time. You won’t know when or where,

but I will come for you, Emily.

That was it. I was done. Once my suitcase was packed, I hit the road. Julia Templet answered my call on the second ring.

“Emily, so glad you called. How are you?”

“Honestly, not so well. I needed to get away from home for a little while, so I thought I’d get a room in Shreveport for a few days. I was hoping that we could get together sometime during my stay,” I said.

“Nonsense! You will not get a room. You’ll stay with us and don’t even think of objecting,” she said sternly.

“I don’t want you to go through any trouble,” I insisted.

“If it were any trouble, I wouldn’t have invited you, dear. What time do you think you’ll arrive?”

“I’m coming into Alexandria right now, so around seven-thirty,” I answered.

“Perfect! Be careful and we’ll see you then,” she said before she disconnected. Seven thirty-five, I pulled into the Templet’s driveway.

“Emily! So nice to see you,” Fred said, taking my bag from me. I reached around and gave him a quick hug.

“Thank you for having me,” I said sincerely.

“Our pleasure,” he said, opening the front door.

Julia was waiting in the foyer and welcomed me with a hug. I’m not sure if it was the strong presence of Jacob or the maternal vibes oozing from her, but I broke down in her arms.

“Shhhh. You’ve had a rough day, haven’t you, dear? Come, a nice, stiff drink will do you some good.”

I nodded, rubbing the tears from my eyes. Fred brought me a box of tissues and two fingers of whiskey. I smiled to show my appreciation. Julia led me to the den, clicked the television off, and gave me her full attention. Fred joined us. Taking a sip of my drink, I let the fire trailing down my esophagus subside some, before telling them the story.

“Oh my,” Julia said.

“That’s a whole heap of nastiness, but all isn’t lost. Your friend hasn’t been indicted,” Fred said assuredly.

“But, the person who left the letter, I’m worried about that one,” Julia said.

“Did you let the men at the Sheriff’s Department know that you received it?” Fred asked, stroking his chin.

“No, sir. I packed my bag and left. The note’s still sitting on my kitchen counter.”

“Reporting it should be top priority when you get home,” Fred suggested.

“I’ll be sure to do that,” I said, stifling a yawn.

“You’re obviously tired, dear. We’ll all sleep on it tonight, then we can problem solve tomorrow,” Julia suggested.

“That sounds wonderful. Thank you so much for your hospitality. I hope you’ll let me return the favor some day.”

“Absolutely! A trip to the bayou sounds wonderful. Now, let me show you where you’ll be staying. I hope you don’t mind, but you’ll be in Jacob’s room,” Julia said.

“That’ll be fine. Thank you,” I replied, following her down the hallway. Shocked that the room still smelled like him, my breath caught in my chest. I missed him so much.
